WordPress + React Headless: When Decoupling Helps (and When It Hurts)

July 12, 2026wordpress · react · headless · architecture

Honest criteria for headless WordPress with a React front — editorial UX, hosting cost, and the complexity tax nobody puts in the pitch deck.

All posts

Headless is a trade, not a promotion

Decoupling WordPress (CMS) from React (front) can unlock custom UX and omnichannel content. It also means you own auth, previews, and caching that plugins used to handle.

When we recommend it

  • Highly interactive marketing experiences WordPress themes fight you on
  • Multi-channel publishing (web + app) from one content store
  • Design systems already living in React

When we push back

  • Simple brochure sites — a well-built theme is faster and cheaper
  • Editors need rich preview with page builders they already know
  • No engineering capacity for previews, revalidation, and form endpoints

Middle paths

Sometimes only one landing experience is React, while the blog stays on WordPress PHP. Hybrid is allowed.

Rayaxis will say no to headless theater. We decouple when the product surface justifies the long-term cost.
